It was UCR's seventh consecutive home win to start the season extending the team's Division I-era record.
Emmons (3-1) allowed just two base runners through the first three innings of play, but San Francisco starter Garrett Luippold (1-1) matched him permitting just a Tony Nix single through the first three frames. The Dons dented the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth as first baseman Nik Balog laced a two-out single to left and Ryan Lipkin followed with a double to center to make it 1-0 San Francisco.
The Highlanders went in order in their half of the fourth, but in the fifth Bryan Horst drilled his first home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game at one. Joey Gonzales followed with a single up the middle, and after a passed ball and a ground out, Trevor Hairgrove brought him home with a two run shot of his own to left center.
The next batter, Brian McConkey, drew a walk to bring Nix to the plate. The Dons had the third out of the inning in hand when Nix struck out swinging, but the ball eluded the catcher, Lipkin, and Nix reached first to extend the UCR half of the fifth. San Francisco made its first call to the bullpen of the day with Haden Hinkle taking the mound to face Michael Hur. Hur greeted him with a single to left which scored McConkey and advanced Nix to third while Hur went to second on the throw home. UC Riverside catcher Robert Brantly singled to right bringing home Nix and Hur, and the score was 6-1 Highlanders.
Emmons allowed the lead-off hitter to reach in the sixth and the seventh, but he worked out of the jam on both occasions. In the meantime, McConkey lifted a sac fly to left in the sixth off of the Dons third pitcher of the afternoon, Jonathan Abramson, which scored Gonzales to make it 7-1 UC Riverside.
In the Highlanders half of the eighth, they burned through three San Francisco pitchers and tacked on three more runs as Horst singled up the middle to plate Trent Jemmett, and Hairgrove singled down the right field line scoring Horst and Gonzales.
Patito replaced Emmons in the eighth and threw a perfect frame while Orozco pitched the ninth allowing a two-out double before closing the door on UC Riverside's ninth win of the season against just five losses.
Emmons struck out six on the day in becoming the Highlanders first three-game winner of the season while Hairgrove finished with UC Riverside's first four-RBI game of the year.
The Highlanders and Dons finish their three-game series with a 1 pm PT time first pitch at the Riverside Sports Complex on Sunday, March 21.
