San Francisco 9, UC Riverside 3 Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to extend its home winning streak to eight straight Sunday afternoon, but the San Francisco Dons had other ideas as they banged out 14 hits en route to a 9-3 win at the Riverside Sports Complex.
With the score tied at three in the top of the sixth Jared Denham beat out a hard-hit infield single to second off of UCR reliever Kevin Dickey. Connor Bernatz followed with a double to left moving Denham to third and chasing Dickey from the game. Derek Speigner took over on the hill and got Robert Abel to lift a fly ball to left for the second out of the inning, but it was deep enough to score Denham for a 4-3 Dons lead.
Mason Morioka followed with a looping drive to center that center fielder Tony Nix dove for, but the umpiring crew ruled that he trapped the ball and Bernatz came home for a two-run San Francisco lead.
The Dons pushed across four more runs in the seventh as Derek Poppert laced a one-out double down the left field line ending Speigner's day and bringing on Mike Wolford. Nik Balog greeted Wolford with a double to center scoring Poppert, and advanced to third on a balk. Ryan Lipkin drew a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner George Lujan, but Wolford caught Lujan leaning picking him off first for the second out of the inning.
Unfortunately, that was the last out Wolford would record as Denham singled to center scoring Balog, Bernatz singled through the left side to put runners at fist and second, and Abel doubled to left center bringing two more runners home and staking San Francisco to a 9-3 lead.
Mitch Patitio took over for Wolford and shut down the Dons allowed just two baserunners over the final two-and-a-third innings.
The damage was done, however, and the Highlanders were unable to battle back. UC Riverside collected six hits and scored three runs in four innings off of San Francisco starter Cameron Love, but they had no such luck with his replacement, Matt Lujan. The Dons brought Lujan in to start the fifth inning, and he allowed just two hits over the final five frames while striking out four.
Michael Hur was the only member of the Highlanders to collect two hits on the day going 2 for four with an RBI. Robert Brantly and Joey Gonzales drove in the other two UC Riverside runs.
The Highlanders next travel to San Diego for a Tuesday afternoon meeting with the Toreros at 3 pm PT.
