San Diego 15, UC Riverside 8 Box Score
San Diego—The San Diego Toreros (12-10) used a seven-run fourth inning to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 10-5 lead and held on to defeat visiting UC Riverside (9-7) Tuesday by a score of 15-8.
The Toreros had all hands on deck in the pitching department as they entered the mid-week game intending to use several pitchers on the day, UC Riverside touched San Diego starter Casey Schmidt for two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Michael Hur that plated Tony Nix, and a fielders choice off the bat of Justin Shults that scored Robert Brantly.
Chris Jensen took over for Schmidt to start the second and despite walking two batters emerged unscathed. Paul Sewald got the call to pitch the third inning, and the Highlanders put two runners on quickly as Brantly doubled to open the frame and Hur drew a walk. Sewald settled down, however, picking up the first out on a fielder's choice grounder back to the mound, and getting the final two outs on a double play grounder.
In the meantime, San Diego got to UC Riverside starter Trevor Frank immediately scoring one run in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Chris Engell, and two more in the second on a sac fly and RBI groundout.
The Highlanders regained the lead in the top of the fourth against the fourth and fifth San Diego pitchers of the day, Sam Wolff and Mike Dedrick. Wolff walked the first two batters of the inning before recording the first out on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Hairgrove. Dedrick replaced Wolff, and was greeted by a Brian McConkey sac fly and a two-run homer to right field by Mike Nesbitt.
Frank pitched a scoreless third for UC Riverside, but he ran into trouble in the decisive bottom of the fourth. He recorded the first out of the inning on a ground out to third, but the next five Toreros to step to the plate singled, singled, homered, walked and walked putting the Highlanders down 6-5 and bringing Mitch Patito out of the bullpen.
Patitio didn't fare any better as Kevin Muno tripled down the left field line making it 8-5 San Diego, and Engell singled through the left side for the ninth Toreros run of the day. Patitio hit the next two batters he faced and walked in run number ten ending his afternoon.
Derek Speinger came in with the bases loaded and still just one out striking out Steven Chatwood and getting Victor Sanchez to lift a fly ball to right center to end the inning.
Dedrick went back out to start the top of the fifth for San Diego and retired the first two Highlanders on a strikeout and pop up to first. His control left him from that point on, however, as he walked Eddie Young and Joey Gonzales and gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Hairgrove and McConkey. Matt Thompson entered the game as the sixth pitcher on the day for the Toreros and ended the inning with a fly ball to right off of Nesbitt's bat.
Speigner worked a scoreless bottom of the fifth for UC Riverside, but in the sixth a hit batsman and consecutive singles made it 11-7 San Diego. After a scoreless seventh for the Highlanders, San Diego put three more runs on the board with three singles, a hit batsman and two walks. San Diego scored its last run of the day in the eighth off of Highlanders reliever Mark Wolford.
Justin Shults led off the top of the ninth with a double and came home on a Gonzales single, but that was all the Highlanders could muster on the day.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend for a four-game series at Saint Mary's before beginning conference play with a three-game home stand with Cal Poly on April 1-3.
