Pacific 6, UC Riverside 5 Game 1 Box Score
UC Riverside 5, Pacific 2 Game 2 Box Score
Stockton, CA—It took longer than they would have liked, but the Highlanders finally solved the Pacific Tigers Saturday evening as they scored three runs in the top of the 11th to pick up a 5-3 win in the final game of the three-game series. The Tigers won each of the first two games of the series, including game one of Saturday's double header, by one run.
The Tigers (19-11, 3-3) had visions of a three-game sweep on their minds taking a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning of Saturday's night-cap, but UCR (15-11, 3-3) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth to force extra innings.
Brian McConkey led off the top of the 11th with a single to right off of pitcher Robbie Richardson, who was beginning his fourth inning of relief work. Joey Gonzales sacrificed McConkey to second, and Michael Hur followed with a walk. Robert Brantly's single to right field put the Highlanders up, 3-2, and the Tigers went to their bullpen again bringing in Jamie Niley. Tony Nix greeted Niey with a double to center to make it 5-3 UC Riverside.
Mike Wolford took to the mound for the Highlanders in the bottom of the 11th, and after getting the first out of the inning, allowed three straight singles to cut the UCR lead to two. He settled down, however, getting two ground ball outs to end the game.
The Highlanders scored first in game one of the double header as McConkey's one out double off of Tigers starter David Rowse in the top of the third scored Trevor Hairgrove from first to put UCR up 1-0. Pacific got the run back in the bottom of the third on a Mike Walker RBI-single to left, and added to the lead in each of the next three innings.
Brett Christopher singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth to put the Tigers up 2-1, Walker homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1 Pacific, and the Tigers put three on the board in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-1 lead. Highlanders started Dustin Emmons was chased with two outs in the bottom of the sixth after giving up 12 hits, walking two and allowing five earned runs.
Trevor Frank came in to replace Emmons ending the threat, and allowed just two hits and a walk over the final two and one third innings of play.
Meanwhile Rowse held the Highlanders to just two hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He ran out of gas in the top of the seventh, however, as the first six UC Riverside hitters reached base. Hairgrove knocked in the first run of the inning with a double down the left field line, McConkey singled to left to cut the Tigers lead to three, and Michael Hur drilled his sixth homer of the season to left to make it a 6-5 ballgame. Hunter Carnevale replaced Rowse and got Robert Brantly to pop up to short to work out of the inning.
Carnevale was every bit as effective as Frank down the stretch allowing the Highlanders just one hit over the final two innings of play as Pacific held on for the win.
UC Riverside opened the second game of the double dip with back-to-back singles by McConkey and Joey Gonzales, eventually loading the bases off of Tigers starter Jake Hummel, but Hummel worked his way out of the inning without allowing a run.
The Highlanders put runners on against Hummel in each of the next five innings getting into scoring position in four of the five, but were unable to dent the scoreboard.
Pacific got to UC Riverside starter Matt Larkins in the bottom of the third when Larkins walked two of the first three batters of the inning and gave up run-scoring singles to Brian Martin and Walker to make it 2-0 Tigers.
Larkins allowed just two hits over the next four innings to keep the Highlanders in the game, and UCR finally scratched out a run off of Hummel in the top of the seventh. Gonzales led off the inning with a single through the left side, and Hur followed with a walk. Thomas Berolzheimer replaced Hummel, and Brantly promptly reached on an error by the center fielder to load the bases with nobody out. Justin Shults grounded into a double play to score Gonzales to cut the Tigers lead in half.
In the top of the eighth, the Highlanders put together a rally off of a new Pacific relief pitcher Robbie Richardson. Hairgrove's got things started by drawing a two-out walk. McConkey followed with a single down the right field line to move Hairgrove to third, and Gonzales's single to left tied the game at two.
Larkins pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth and ninth to send the game into extra innings. Mitch Patito threw a scoreless bottom of the tenth for UC Riverside giving the Highlanders the opportunity to win the game in the eleventh.
Next uo for the Highlanders is a Tuesday, April 13 meeting with nationally-ranked UCLA. First pitch at the Riverside Sports Complex is slated for 6 pm PT.
