Irvine, CA—Freshman forward Jessica Armel, who scored a pair of goals in helping the Highlanders to their first-ever NCAA Division I victory Sunday was named Big West Player of the Week for the week of September 3.
Armel, a resident of Alta Loma, CA who graduated from St. Lucy's Priory HS, scored the first goal in program history in the 21st minute against Nevada. Deep in the Nevada zone, UCR midfielder Kerri Fahres' pass was partially deflected by a Wolf Pack defender, but landed right at the feet of Armel, who flicked it over the head of goalkeeper Jessica Gregg.
Armel struck again in the 50th minute, taking a cross from midfielder Jill Intarachote and putting it in the back of the net.
In all, Armel had a game-high eight shots, five on goal.
