Box Score - UC Riverside 5, CSU Bakersfield 1
Riverside, CA - After two rains out during the week, the UC Riverside baseball team returned to action with a 5-1 non-conference win over CSU Bakersfield on Friday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders improve to 18-13 on the year while the Roadrunners fall to 17-18.
UCR starter Matt Andriese pitched a complete game, allowing just one run while striking out a career-high nine batters. The Roadrunners hit him early with three hits resulting in the one run in the opening frame, but Andriese settled down after that allowing no runs through the next eight innings.
UCR threatened in the first inning with runners at the corners, but could not bring the tying run home. The Highlanders again had runners in scoring position with Joey Gonzalez at second and Trevor Hairgrove at third in the bottom of the third, but a fly out ended the scoring opportunity.

The Highlanders added three insurance runs in the sixth behind four doubles to open up a 4-1 advantage. Robert Brantly led off with a double and advanced 90 feet on an error by the left fielder. He was then brought home on a Justin Shults double.
Nix then grounded out to the second baseman to advance Shults to third, and a batter later, Nesbitt drilled another double to make it 3-1. After a ground out, Brian Horst doubled to center field to plate Nesbitt, giving the Highlanders a three-run margin.
UC Riverside put another run on the board in the eighth inning an an Eddie Young sacrifice fly scored Shults from third.
Cal State Bakersfield made things interesting in the top of the ninth with runners at first and second, but Andriese got Derek Geisinger to strike out to end the game.
Shults led the Highlanders with two runs while five different players tallied two hits apiece and four other players had one RBI each.
UCR continues its three-game series against the Runners on Saturday, Apr. 24 with a 6:00 pm first pitch game at the Riverside Sports Complex.
