Pacific 7, UC Riverside 6 Box Score
Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a 6-5 lead into the late innings at Pacific Friday evening, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Tigers (18-10, 2-2) scored two in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win.
Justin Shults hit a solo home run for UCR (14-10, 2-2) in the top of the eighth to put the Highlanders up one, and after starter Matt Andriese got through a scoreless bottom half of the inning, Head Coach Doug Smith went to his bullpen. Derek Speigner got the call and got into trouble immediately issuing a lead-off walk to Ben Gorang. A balk sent Gorang to second, and a Joe Oliveira infield single put runners on first and third.
A walk to Nick Longmire loaded the bases, causing Smith to bring in Carl Wolford to get out of the jam. Wolford got Brett Christopher to fly out to center which brought home the tying run, and Brian Martin singled to center for the game-winner.
Hunter Carinvale picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief work to improve to 1-3 on the season while Speigner's record fell to 1-1.
It was the Highlanders taking an early lead in the top of the third when Brian McConkey singled to right bringing home Bryan Horst. The Tigers responded with three in the bottom half of the inning as they strung together a single, a walk, a wild pitch, a double and a single to take a two-run lead.
Pacific made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but UC Riverside rallied to tie it up in the top of the fifth. Horst singled off of Tigers starter Marcus Pointer to begin the inning, and a Trevor Hairgrove triple one batter later made it a two-run game. Two hitters later, Joey Gonzales doubled down the left field line to score Hairgrove, and Michael Hur's single to left tied the game.
In the top of the seventh, Hur's single through the right side scored Brian McConkey to give the Highlanders a 5-4 lead, but the Tigers got the run back in the bottom half of the frame on Longmire's third homerun of the season. Shults' third homer of the season a half inning later gave UC Riverside the lead setting up the Tigers comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
The Highlanders and Tigers finish their three-game series on Saturday with a double header beginning at 2 pm PT.
