Nix Continues Tear In UC Riverside's 13-5 Win Over Cal State Northridge
5/14/2010 10:05:39 PM | Baseball
UC Riverside 13, Cal State Northridge 5 Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside center fielder Tony Nix continued his torrid hitting Friday evening driving in five runs with a first-inning grand slam and a second-inning RBI single as the Highlanders cruised to a 13-5 win over visiting Cal State Northridge at the Riverside Sports Complex.
The junior from Poway, California is now 13 for 19 on the week with nine runs scored and 14 runs batted in in four games, raising his average 62 points over that span. He also extended his streak of consecutive at bats with a hit to nine before a ground out to short in the third inning ended the impressive run.
Nix wasn't the only player in on the offensive act Friday as the Highlanders put all 13 of their runs on the board over the first three innings. Paul Tremlim (6-6) got the start for the Matadors and in the first he gave up an RBI double to UCR catcher Robert Brantly and Nix's grand slam.
The Highlanders almost gave four back in the top of the second as Cal State Northridge touched UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese (5-4) for two hits and a walk, and the UCR defense committed two errors.
UC Riverside's bats weren't phased, however, as they plated four more runs in both the second and third innings. Tremlin was chased after the first two-plus innings in which he allowed eight hits, three walks and nine earned runs. Trevor Fredrickson came on in relief and gave up the final two runs in the third before pitching a scoreless fourth and fifth innings.
The rest of the Matadors relief corp allowed just one hit the rest of the way holding the Highlanders scoreless for the remainder of the game, but the lead proved to be too large.
Andriese gave up just three more hits after the top of the second, giving way to Mark Garcia in the eighth. The freshman left-hander gave up two hits over the final two innings, including a solo shot to Dominic D'Anna for the last run of the game.
The Highlanders and Matadors square off again on Saturday evening with first pitch slated for 6 pm PT.
