UC Riverside 4, Cal State Northridge 1, Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside designated hitter Justin Shults led off the bottom of the second inning with his team-leading tenth home run of the season Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex, and the Highlanders went on to a 4-1 win over visiting Cal State Northridge. The win improves UCR's record to 27-19 overall and 9-8 in the Big West Conference. The Matadors fall to 24-22 and 6-11.
Dustin Emmons (7-4) got the start for the Highlanders, and threw a complete-game six-hitter, striking out five and walking three.
Shults got UC Riverside on the board first with his solo shot in the second, and the Highlanders tacked on three more runs in the fifth to give Emmons all the support he needed. Joey Gonzales laced a one-out single up the middle and Michael Hur followed with a walk. That ended the day for Matadors starter Justen Gorski (4-2) bringing on Billy Ott in relief.
Robert Brantly greeted Ott with a single to right scoring Gonzales and advancing Hur to third. Shults then flied out to left field scoring Hur on the sac fly. Tony Nix reached on an infield single, but shortstop TS Reed's throw got away from first baseman Dominic D'Anna allowing Brantly to come around and score for a 4-0 Highlanders lead.
Emmons continued his mastery of the Matadors allowing just three hits through the first seven innings. His bid for a shutout came to an end in the top of the eighth when CJ Belanger doubled to open the frame, and Ryan Pineda's single up the middle brought him home.
The final game of the three-game series between these teams is slated for Sunday afternoon, May 16 with a 1 pm PT first pitch.
