Highlanders Complete Sweep Of Cal State Northridge With 9-3 Win

UC Riverside 9, Cal State Northridge 3, Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team completed a sweep of Cal State Northridge Sunday afternoon scoring six runs in the first inning on the way to a 9-3 win. With the victory the Highlanders improve to 28-19 and 10-8 in conference, one game behind third place Pacific (30-17, 11-7).
Brian McConkey grounded out to open the bottom of the first for UC Riverside, but the next eight Highlanders collected base hits. Gonzales singled to left advancing to second on a wild pitch and to third on a failed pick off attempt. Hur singled through the left side made it 1-0 UCR. Robert Brantly then sent a Ryan Juarez (2-6) offering over the center field wall to make it 3-0 Highlanders.
UC Riverside wasn't done, though, as Justin Shults singled up the middle and moved to third on a Tony Nix single to right center. That ended Juarez's day as the Matadors brought in Jimmy Jolicouer from the bullpen. Eddie Young greeted Jolicouer with an infield single scoring Shults, and a Bryan Horst single brought Nix home and moved Young to second. Trevor Hairgrove's single to left scored Young with the sixth and final UCR run of the inning.
Matt Larkins (6-3) got the start for the Highlanders, scattering six hits over seven innings and allowing two runs in picking up the win. One of thse runs came in the top of the second when C.J. Belanger opened the inning with a triple and came home on a Brad Decater single up the middle.
The Highlanders got the run back in the bottom of the third when Tony Nix led off the inning with a homer run over the Del Taco sign in left field.
The Matadors touched Larkins for another run in the top hal fof the fourth inning as Decater drew a one out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Larkins retired pinch hitter Nate Ring, catcher Dominic Piazza single to left scoring Decater. That was the last hit Cal State Northridge would get off of Larkins as he shut the Matadors down in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
The Highlanders made it a 9-2 ballgame in the bottom of the fourth as Brantly brought home McConkey with a sacrifice fly, and Shults's single to right scored Gonzales.
Derek Speigner came on in relief of Larkins to start the top of the eighth and gave up a lead-off single to Ryan Pineda. Pineda stole second, advanced to thrd on a fly ball to center, and scored on a Belanger sac fly to left to make it a 9-3 game. Mitch Patito came on to throw the ninth for the Highlanders
Next up for UC Riverside is a three-game series with second place UC Irvine beginning Friday, May 21. First pitch at Anteater Ballpark is slated for 6 pm PT.
