Baseball's Comeback Falls Short In 9-7 Loss At No. 22 San Diego

San Diego 9, UC Riverside 7 Box Score
San Diego—Trailing 9-4 after four innings, the UC Riverside Baseball Team scored two runs in the top of the fifth and another in the sixth, but that was all they could muster as they fell to No. 22 San Diego Tuesday evening.
The Toreros got to UC Riverside starter Trevor Frank (2-2) early as six of the first seven batter reached base in the bottom of the first with the lone out coming on a sacrifice bunt. By the time the Highlanders got out of the inning it was 5-0 San Diego (27-16).
The Highlanders cut the lead to two in their half of the second on a two-RBI double by Eddie Young and a sac fly off the bat of Brian McConkey, but UC Riverside (23-15) gave back an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3 San Diego.
In the top of the third, Michael Hur scored on a double play grounder by Tony Nix to make it a two run game again. The Toreros put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third, ending Frank's day. Derek Speigner came in to relieve Frank, and James Meador greeted him with a single through the right side which plated a pair.
Zach Kometani's double in the bottom of the fourth brought home Nick McCoy to push the San Diego lead back out to five, Eddie Orozco pitched the final four innings for the Highlanders and shut down the Toreros offense allowing just one hit over that span while striking out four to keep UCR in the game.
The UC Riverside offense started to chip away at the lead in the top of the fifth as Robert Brantly laced a two out homer, his fifth of the season, over the right field fence. Bryan Horst brought home another run with a bases-loaded infield single that same inning. Unfortunately, the Highlanders left the bases loaded to end the frame.
In the UCR half of the sixth, Joey Gonzales hit his fourth homer of the year to make it 9-7 San Diego, however, the Highlanders managed just one hit over the final three innings off of relief pitchers Matt Thompson and Matt Hauser, and the Toreros had the win in hand.
The Highlanders conclude their eight-game road swing this weekend with a three-game Big West Conference series with No. 10 Cal State Fullerton.
