Lions Run Past Highlanders 3-0 In Second Game Of Utah State Inv.

Logan, UT - The UC Riverside volleyball team continued play on Friday evening with a 3-0 loss to Loyola Marymount in the second game of the Utah State Invitational at Smith Spectrum, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-17.
The Highlanders (1-10) quickly went down 5-0 to open the first set against the Lions (5-6), but scored the next four straight to close the deficit to 5-4. During that span UCR benefited from two blocks from Endersby and Wypiszynski, and Endersby kill, and a LMU error.
Loyola Marymount's lead stayed between two and four points until the Highlanders tied the set at 15-15 after scoring three consecutive points off another Endersby kill and two Lion errors.
LMU pushed its lead back out to four, 21-17, but UC Riverside got it to within one, 21-20, off three straight kills. The Highlanders were down by one at 23-22 and again at 24-23, but could not get the stop as Jasmine Rankins' kill gaave the Lions a 25-23 first-set win.
The Lions led the from beginning of set two and opened up a 19-12 margin midway through the set. UCR crawled back to within three, 19-16, but were limited to just one point down the stretch as Loyola Marymount won 25-18.
In the third set, UCR turned an early 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead. After trading points and tied at 6-6, the Lions scored four points to take a 10-6 advantage.
LMU continued to build its lead, opening its largest margin of the set at 20-11 en route to a 25-17 victory.
Savannah Thomas, Kelly Simpson, and Shelby LeDuff led UCR with nine kills apiece, while Simpson was just shy of a double-double as she added nine digs.
The Highlanders conclude the Utah State Invitational on Saturday morning against the host Aggies at 11:00 AM.
