Volleyball Defeated In Three By Utah Valley To Open Utah State Invitational

Logan, UT - The UC Riverside volleyball team opened play on Friday morning at the Utah State Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Utah Valley, 25-21, 25-20, and 26-24, at Smith Spectrum.
After dropping the first two sets, the Highlanders were looking to avoid the sweep as they were tied at 24 with the Wolverines late in the third. Jaicee Kuresa's kill then put Utah Valley up 25-24, and on the next possession Erica Nish's kill gave UVU the 26-24 win.
For the game, Bianca Endersby, Savannah Thomas, and Annishia McKoy all led UCR with seven kills apiece. McKoy (pictured left) also added four blocks, a game-high. Utah Valley's Kayli Doxey had 13 kills to lead all players.
In the first set, the Highlanders rallied from a 12-9 deficit to tie it up at 13 apiece. The Wolverines then scored four straight to take a 17-13 lead, forcing a UCR timeout. The Highlanders regrouped and tied the set at 20-20, capped off by a Kelly Simpson kill.
Unfortunately for UC Riverside, Utah Valley again went on a 4-0 run to lead at set-point, 24-20. The Highlanders got one back, but it wasn't enough as a Chelsey Heaps kill gave the Wolverines the set.
UC Riverside took an early 4-1 advantage in the second set on two Endersby kills, one Shelby LeDuff service ace, and an attack error by UVU. The Highlanders maintained their lead at 6-3, but the Wolverines then went on a 7-0 run to lead 10-6.
UCR could not get closer than three points for the remainder of the set as Utah Valley won 25-20.
In the third set, there was 13 tie scores and four lead changes throughout, including seven tie scores after both teams reached 18 points.
Utah Valley led 18-14 midway through—its largest lead of the set—but the Highlanders scored four consecutive to tie things at 18. After trading points until both teams were tied at 24-24, the Wolverines scored the two points needed for the victory.
The Highlanders continue play at the Utah State Invitational later on Friday afternoon with a 3:30 PST match against Loyola Marymount in Logan, UT.
