Riverside, CA—After participating in four neutral-site tournaments to open the 2010 season, the UC Riverside Volleyball Team (1-12, 0-1) got its first taste of the Student Recreation Center Friday as the UC Davis Aggies (10-4, 2-0) came calling for the start of Big West Conference play. Despite leading midway through each of the first three sets, the Highlanders couldn't hold on, and the Aggies rallied for the eventual 3-1 win.
The Highlanders won the first point of the match, and Amanda Vialpando's service ace pushed the UCR lead to 11-8. But UC Davis scored the next three points to tie things up, and closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the first set, 25-20.
An attack error by the Aggies combined with kills by Annishia McKoy and Shelby LeDuff gave the Highlanders a 3-0 lead to open the second set, and they still led midway through by a 12-10 margin. However UC Davis took control with a 9-2 run of their own and went on to win, 25-19.
Following a familiar pattern, UC Riverside once again took the early lead in the third opening up a five-point cushion at 7-2, and an eight-point gap at 14-6. The Aggies scored five straight to make it a 14-11 game, and eventually came within a point at 18-17, but four Savannah Thomas kills helped the Highlanders pull away, 25-19.
In the decisive fourth set it was UC Davis jumping in front scoring 14 of the first 21 points. Still trailing by six at 22-16, UCR scored six of the next eight to cut the lead to two at 24-22, but Melanie Adams kill gave the Aggies the set and the win.
The Highlanders remain at home Saturday as the Pacific Tigers (7-5, 0-1) head to the Student Recreation Center for a 7 pm PT tip off.
