Late Valparaiso Goals Send Men's Soccer To 2-1 Overtime Loss
9/6/2010 1:13:15 PM | Men's Soccer
Valparaiso 2, UC Riverside 1 (OT) Box Score
Las Vegas, NV—Arnie Sanchez gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead, scoring with 9:31 remaining in regulation, but Valparaiso's Roby Del Giudice countered with a goal in the 88th minute to send the match into overtime, and netted the game winner with 1:35 left in the first extra period to give the Crusaders a 2-1 win.
Valpo outshot the UC Riverside by a slim 10-8 margin, but Sanchez was the only member of the Highlanders credited with a shot on goal as Hayden Leslie found Sanchez six yards out, and the Perris, CA native placed the ball inside the left post for a 1-0 UCR lead.
It looked like the Highlanders would come home with a sweep at the UNLV Nike Invitational, but with less than three minutes remaining, Stefan Antonijevic found Del Giudice alone in the box and the score was tied at one.
The match-winner came on a give-and-go between Zack Stivers and Del Giudice, and came with 8:25 gone in the first overtime.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 1-2-0 on the season while the Crusaders improve to 1-1-0.
Next up for UC Riverside is a trip to fifth ranked UCLA on Thursday, September 9 with kick off slated for 7 pm PT.
