Riverside, CA - Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored a game-high 19 points and Alyssa Morris added 18, but it wasn't enough as the UC Riverside women's basketball team lost 62-59 to the Pacific Tigers in Big West action on Saturday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders fall to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in league play, while the Tigers improve to 6-15, 3-5.
After Pacific went up 58-51 with 6:54 left in the game, the Highlanders scored eight straight to go up one, 59-58, with 1:17 to go. Errant fouls by UCR sent the Tigers to the line, where they made four free throws to take a 62-59 lead with nine seconds left. The Highlanders could not convert any last second opportunities, however, as they turned the ball over.
Nottingham led all players with 19 points while Morris added 18 and grabbed eight rebounds. The Tigers had a balanced scoring attack as four players scored in double figures, led by Jordan Rogers' 13 points.
The first half was very much of a back and forth game as there were 12 tie scores and 11 lead changes through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Highlanders took their first lead of the game since it was 3-2 on a Nottingham three-pointer at the 9:26 mark that started a 5-0 run giving UCR a 17-12 lead.
Pacific matched the Highlanders run with five straight points over the next minute to tie the game at 17, and both teams traded buckets to conclude the period tied at 30.
UC Riverside came out of the break scoring five straight points on a Waddell layup and a Morris three-pointer to go up 35-30. The Tigers outscored the Highlanders 10-3 over the next four minutes as they led 40-38 with 16:12 to go, and took their largest lead of the game, 52-43, with 9:50 remaining.
UCR scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to four, 53-49, and took a one-point lead with a minute and 17 seconds left before falling in the final minute.
Pacific's bench played a big role in the win, scoring 17 points to just six for UCR's bench. Both teams shot just around 40.0 percent from the field, but the Tigers hit 45.5 percent of their long balls compared to just 33.3 percent for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside returns to action on the road at Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 pm in Northridge, CA.
