10/11/2011 12:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The past two times the UC Riverside Men's Soccer team has pulled upsets against ranked opponents, those teams have been ranked seventh in the nation. This Wednesday's opponent? Seventh ranked UC Irvine. Kickoff at the UCR Soccer Stadium is slated for 7 pm, and those fans who are unable to attend may follow the match online and via select mobile devices via LiveStats.
A win over the Anteaters would also extend the Highlanders home unbeaten streak to six matches, but UC Irvine enters the match having won 11 of 13 on the season, outscoring their opponents 26 to 11.
The Anteaters opened the season with seven straight victories before falling at twelfth-ranked South Florida by a 2-0 score. Their second loss of the season came in the team's Big West Conference opener, 1-0 vs. Cal Poly, but since then, UCI has rattled off three straight victories including a 2-0 shutout of then seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
UC Riverside and UC Irvine split the teams' first eight meetings in the series with both squads winning three matches and two matches ending in ties. Since that time, the Anteaters have won of 10 of the last 12 between the clubs. The Highlanders last win over UC Irvine came on November 7, 2007 in a 2-0 home victory.
Following Wednesday's tilt with the Anteaters, a road match at Cal State Fullerton awaits UCR on Saturday, October 15. Kick off is slated for 7 pm.
The Titans (6-4-2, 0-3-0) have lost three straight matches, and are the lone remaining winless team in Big West play this season. CSF is being outscored 10-1 in conference matches this season, including a 6-0 loss at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, October 11.
The Highlanders ended a six-match winless streak against the Titans last season with a 3-2 win at Cal State Fullerton on October 20. Ruben Valencia scored a pair of goals in the match including the go-ahead score in the 56th minute of play.
