Lightning Doesn't Strike Twice As Men's Soccer Falls To No. 7 UC Irvine
10/12/2011 9:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The second largest crowd in UC Riverside soccer history was in attendance Wednesday evening to watch the UCR Men's Soccer Team try to pull off its second upset of a No. 7 ranked team this season. Unfortunately for the Highlanders (6-5-1, 1-3-0) faithful, it was the UC Irvine Anteaters who backed up their national ranking with a 5-1 victory (Box Score)
The teams played evenly for the first 20 minutes of the match, but in the 21st minute Christopher Santana found Miguel Ibarra just inside the box for the first goal of the evening.
Nearly seven minutes later, the Anteaters (12-2-0, 4-1-0) made it 2-0 following a UCR penalty in their own box as Christian Hernandez connected on the subsequent penalty kick
With 6:01 remaining in the first period, Norby Rodriguez gave UC Irvine a three-goal lead as he found the back of the net following a UCR save.
Early in the second period, the Anteaters' Jimmy Turner had a throw in just 5 yards off of the UCR end line. The Highlanders Juan Valladolid deflected the toss, but it ricocheted off the cross bar and barely crossed the goal line to make it 4-0 UCI.
UCR finally got on the board in the 53rd minute of play when Azeez Atanda found Cesar Diaz Pizarro or the senior's team-lading sixth score of the season.
The Anteaters ended the scoring just over five minutes later when Hernandez found Santana open inside the UC Riverside 18 for UC Irvine's fifth goal of the night.
The Highlanders hit the road this weekend for a Saturday, October 15 meeting with the Cal State Fullerton Titans. Kick off is slated for 7 pm PT.
