UC Riverside Volleyball Stays Close But Falls 3-0 At UC Davis

Davis, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to win its second straight match on Friday night at UC Davis, but although the Highlanders stayed close, the Aggies came away with the 3-0 victory at Upper Hickey Gym.
UC Riverside (4-14, 1-3) led at set-point 25-24 in the first set before the Aggies (17-5, 3-2) rallied for a 27-25 win. There were 14 ties scores and 11 lead changes combined in sets two and three, but UCD held on for 25-19 and 25-20 victories.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with 16 kills while Shelby LeDuff added 14 for the Highlanders.
Tied at seven in set one, UC Davis scored three straight points to go up 10-7 before the Highlanders tied it at 11 and proceeded to go up 15-11. UCR used a Jessica Moncayo ace, kills by LeDuff and Vialpando, a block from Megan Reza and Vialpando, and an error by UCD to go up by four.
The Aggies turned the tables as they scored four straight to tie the set at 15-15. The teams traded points until the Highlanders led at set-point twice, at 24-23 and at 25-24. However, UC Riverside could not stop the Aggies as Devon Damelio's kill and an error by UCR's Leduff lifted UCD to a 27-25 win.
In the second set, the Highlanders rallied back from a 13-9 deficit to tie the set at 13-13, capped off by another Moncayo service ace.
At 15-15, UC Davis pulled away scoring four consecutive to take a 19-15 advantage. UC Riverside could not get closer than three the rest of the set as UCD won 25-19.
Similar to the second set, the Highlanders stayed close with the Aggies for most of the third set until UC Davis pulled away late.
UCR led 16-14 midway through, but UCD scored six straight points to go up 20-16. The Highlanders closed to two, 20-19, but that was as close as they got as the Aggies concluded the sweep 25-20.
UC Riverside continues its Northern California swing with a 7:00 pm match at Pacific on Saturday, October 8 in Stockton, CA.
