Offensive Explosion Lifts UCR To First Win Of Season, 76-62, Over CSUB

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team scored a season-high 76 points with four players scoring in double-figures Saturday afternoon as the team defeated CSU Bakersfield 76-62 at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders (1-3) used a 15-2 run to open the second half, turning a 36-33 lead into a 51-35 advantage. UCR's lead stayed above double-digits the rest of the half as the Runners (2-2) could not get closer than 10 points.
UC Riverside outscored CSUB 40-29 in the period while shooting close to 50 percent, and holding the Runners to just 32.4 percent.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored a season-high 18 points for the Highlanders, hitting 4-11 from the field including 4-5 from beyond the arc and 6-6 from the free throw line. Jessica Ogunnorin and Natasha Hadley each added 16 points each while Jazzmin Lewis had 12.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as the lead changed hands four times. UCR opened with a 4-0 advantage on jumpers by Lewis and Ogunnorin, but the Runners quickly tied the game at six.
CSU Bakersfield took their first lead of the game, 13-10, on an Amber Williams three-pointer at the 14:15 mark. A Hadley jumper 19 seconds later started a 7-0 run for the Highlanders as they took a 17-13 advantage.
The teams traded buckets for the rest of the half until UC Riverside went up five, 36-31, after two free throws apiece from Nottingham and Ogunnorin. CSUB cut the lead to 36-33 to end the half, though, with a pair of free throws from Ciarra Ford.
After scoring just 36 total points in their most recent game at UNLV on November 16, the Highlanders scored 36 in the first half while shooting 42.9 percent (12-28) from the field.
For the game, UCR shot a season-best 45.5 percent from the field while limiting CSUB--who had been averaging 100.7 points per game and 48.9 percent shooting--to just 62 points and 31.9 percent shooting.
The Highlanders now host Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, November 23 for a 7:00 pm tip at the Student Recreation Center.
