Men's Basketball Leads Early But Falls 56-35 To USC
11/30/2011 9:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team thrilled a sold-out crowd of 2,753 at the Student Recreation Center Wedensday evening, jumping out to a 10-2 lead after the first three-plus minutes of play against USC, but the Trojans clamped down on defense the rest of the way en route to a 56-35 victory (Box Score).
The Highlanders (2-5) scored the first six points of the game on consecutive three-pointers by Phil Martin and Daymond Cowlah, and pushed their advantage to 10-2 after two Martin free throws with just over three minutes gone by.
The Trojans (4-4) would rally to take their first lead of the game at 16-15 capped off by an Alexis Moore jumper at the 11:08 mark. Southern California pushed its advantage to 10, 32-22, with 0:47 left in the half before an Austin Quick jumper put UC Riverside within single-digits, 32-24, to enter the half.
The Highlanders hit 45.0 percent (9-of-20) of their shots in the first period, but the second half was a different story as the Trojans limited them to just 22.2 percent (4-of-18) in the second half as USC outscored them 24-11.
Martin led the Highlanders with 13 points while Kareem Nitoto added 11. Greg Allen paced USC with 11 points, and Alexis Moore added 10 for the Trojans.
The 35 points scored by UCR is the lowest total in the team's Division I history. The previous low was 37 at UC Irvine on February 15, 2006.
UC Riverside now takes a break from competition for finals, and returns to action on the road at Montana State for a 12 pm PT tip on December 11.
