Men's Basketball Heads South To San Diego State For Monday Night Tilt

San DIego, CA—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team faces one of its most difficult challenges to date Monday evening as they travel to San Diego State for a 7 pm tilt with the Aztecs.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 71-47 loss at Nevada where they struggled defensively allowing the Wolf Pack to connect on 46.9 percent of its field goal attempts including 60.0 percent in the second half. UCR also lost the free throw battle as Nevada went to the line 30 times, while the Highlanders managed just 9 attempts from the charity stripe.
Phil Martin’s 15.8 points per game scoring average leads the Highlanders, and Robert Smith, who became eligible to play three games ago, is also in double figures at 10.0 per game.
San Diego State enters the game averaging 72.0 points while connecting on 44.9 percent of their field goal attempts including 34.7 percent of their three-pointers. The Aztecs also have taken 76 more free throws than their opponents on the season.
SDSU has won two straight and six of its last seven games. Their two losses are to nationally ranked opponents Baylor and Creighton. They also boast wins over #23 Arizona and #24 Cal. The Highlanders are the fourth Big West team the Aztecs have faced this season, and they are a perfect 3-0 with victories over UC Davis (89-74), Long Beach State (77-73 in OT) and UC Santa Barbara (76-75 in OT).
Chase Tapley leads the SDSU offense averaging 17.7 points while making 50.4 percent of his field goal attempts and 50.8 percent of his three-pointers.
Jamaal Franklin is the second leading scorer for the Aztecs at 14.9 points per game, but he has come off the bench in each of his 10 contests. Xavier Thames also averages in double figures for San Diego State chipping in with 12.3 points per game.
