San Diego State Too Strong As Aztecs Top Men's Basketball 80-55
12/19/2011 6:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball
San Diego, CA—San Diego State joins the Big West for the 2013-14 season, but they've put conference opponents on notice two years early as the Aztecs ran their record against Big West teams to 4-0 on the year with an 80-55 win over the Highlanders Monday evening. (Box Score)
SDSU already had wins over UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara to its credit, and they shot 55.4 percent from the field on the night to make the Highlanders their fourth Big West victim.
San Diego State's dominance started early as the Aztecs made their first four shots of the game building a 13-2 lead with 3:42 gone in the first. Over the next 10 minutes, the SDSU lead vacillated between nine and 13 points, but the Aztecs went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Garrett Green dunk to go up 37-16 with 4:10 to go.
A TJ Burke drive down the lane ended the run, and a Burke three-pointer two possessions later made it 39-21, but SDSU extended its lead once again and entered the locker room with a 20-point cushion, 45-25.
The Aztecs hit 18 of 31 (58.1%) shots in the first including 6 of 11 (54.5%) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Highlanders made 12 of 37 (32.4%) shots from the field missing six of seven three-pointers.
James Rahon led all scorers in the first with 11 points, while Phil Martin's 10 points paced UC Riverside.
Whatever Head Coach Jim Wooldridge said at halftime had the desired effect as the Highlanders scored the first seven points of the second half, but UCR was never able to get any closer.
It was still a 14-point lead with 9:31 remaining on the game clock when San Diego State put together an 11-0 run to effectively end the game.
Martin finished with a team-high 16 while Elliott Berry enjoyed one of his most productive offensive performances of the season scoring 14 points on seven of eight shooting from the field
San Diego State's Rahon led all scorers with 19 points and Dominique Tapley added 17 for the Aztecs.
The Highlanders have one more game on the docket before taking a break for the holidays as San Jose State comes to the SRC on Thursday, December 22 for a 7 pm PT tip off.
