Bradshaw's Season-High 16 Points Help Highlanders To 66-64 Win Over SJSU
12/22/2011 5:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Kevin Bradshaw gave UC Riverside Men's Basketball fans an early Christmas present Thursday evening as his season-high 16 points helped the Highlanders to a 66-64 win over visiting San Jose State. (Box Score)
UCR led almost the entire way, but a 16-6 run late in the second half gave the Spartans new life tying the game at 56 with 3:55 to go.
The Highlanders still led by one with eight seconds remaining, and San Jose State was forced to foul Daymond Cowlah sending the sophomore to the line for two. His first attempt found the bottom of the net, but his second shot was off the mark.
DJ Brown secured the rebound for the Spartans, but James Kinney's subsequent three for the win bounced safely away as time expired.
The Highlanders faithful were on their feet early Thursday at the SRC, as a Kareem NItoto three-pointer with 2:37 gone in the game ignited a 10-0 run that put UC RIverside up by nine, 14-5.
UCR pushed its lead out to as many as 12 points in the first, but the Spartans scored the final seven points of the period to cut the Highlanders advantage to five at the break, 29-24.
Phil Martin and Nitoto each scored seven points to pace UCR's offense in the first half, while Keith Shamburger and James Kinney led SJSU with nine points apiece.
Matt Ballard's tip in for the Spartans to start the second half made it a three-point game, but the Highlanders scored 13 of the next 19 points, and Bradshaw's free throws with 14:05 to go pushed UCR's lead back in to double-digits, 42-32.
The Highlanders still led by 10, 50-40, with 9:56 on the clock, but Shamburger caught fire scoring eight of the next 16 SJSU points as the Spartans tied the game at 56. They were never able to secure the lead, however, and UC Riverside held on for its fifth win of the season.
Nitoto (14 points) and Martin (13) joined Bradshaw in double figures for the Highlanders, while Shamburger led all scorers with 24 points. Kinney added 18 for San Jose State, who fell to 5-8 on the year.
UC Riverside has the next few days off to celebrate the holidays before traveling to UT San Antonio for a Wednesday, December 28 tilt. Tip is slated for 5 pm PT.
