Riverside—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team has one more game on the docket before breaking for the holidays as San Jose State comes to the Student Recreation Center on Thursday, December 22 for a 7 pm PT tip.
The Highlanders are coming off of an 80-55 loss at San Diego State which dropped the team’s record to 4-7 on the season. Elliott Berry scored a season-high 14 points in the loss making seven of eight shots from the floor. Phil Martin added 16 points, but the rest of the team scored just 25 while making 10 of 39 shots from the field.
Martin is the lone member of the Highlanders averaging double figures in scoring at 15.8 points per contest. He is also UC Riverside’s leading rebounder at 5.8 per game.
San Jose State enters the game with a 4-7 record coming off of a 79-59 win over UC Davis. That was the fourth game for the Spartans this season against a Big West opponent as they previously dropped 79-52 and 47-40 decisions to Cal Poly, and upended UC Irvine 51-50.
James Kinney is the leading scorer for SJSU at 16.1 points per game followed by Keith Shamburger (14.3) and Wil Carter (10.5). As a team, the Spartans are connecting on just 38.1 percent of their field goal attempts on the season and 33.6 percent from long distance.
The Highlanders are 2-4 all-time against the Spartans, and the last four meetings between the clubs have all been decided by four points or less. Last season, UCR trailed San Jose State 72-71 with 3:41 to go in the game, but couldn’t quite get over the hump. Javon Borum’s three-pointer with time running out was off the mark, and the Spartans walked away with an 80-77 victory.
