Long Beach State 68, UC Riverside 55 - Box Score
Long Beach—Long Beach State showed why it is the class of the Big West this season improving to 11-2 in conference following a 68-55 win over the visiting Highlanders Wednesday evening.
Phil Martin was back in uniform for UC Riverside, and he finished with 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders made just 36.7 percent of their shots on the night.
The 49ers led 9-8 at the first media timeout, but LBSU scored 20 of the next 27 points to build a 14-point lead at 29-15 with nine and change to go in the first period. They extended their advantage to 21 with 3:57 to go until the break, and went into halftime ahead 43-24.
The Highlanders scored the first five points coming out of the locker room and trailed by 14 at the first media time out of the second half, 49-35. Kevin Bradshaw's put back with 12:05 to go made it a 12-point game, but UC Riverside couldn't get any closer until it was too late.
Javon Borum scored 13 points on the night which marked the 21st straight game the senior guard has reached double-figures in scoring extending his Division I-era program record. Casper Ware paced the 49ers with 17 points and Larry Anderson chipped in with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Highlanders take their final break from conference play this weekend as they travel to Fresno State as part of the ESPN Sears BracketBusters. Tip Saturday is slated for 7 pm PT.
