UC Riverside 11, San Diego 8 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team pushed its record above .500 for the first time this season with an 11-8 win over visiting San Diego Tuesday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. Dustin Emmons (1-2) pitched four innings of two-hit relief to pick up the win.
Things didn't start out well for the Highlanders as Toreros leadoff hitter Kevin Muno reached on a two-base error when UCR rightfielder David Andriese mishandled his fly ball to right center. Muro promptly stole third, and came home on a grounder to second. Kris Bryant made a 2-0 San Diego lead one batter later when he launched a Mark Garcia offering over the left field wall.
The Highlanders got half of that back in the bottom of the first as Ryan Goetz led off the inning with a triple off the wall in right center. Eddie Young followed with a walk and a stolen base to put runners at second and third. The next three Highlanders were retired in order, but one of them was a 4-3 ground out off of Justin Shults' bat that scored Goetz.
San Diego threatened in the top of the third when Scott Shauer doubled to open the inning. One out later, Zack Kometani lifted a fly ball to right center that bounced of Andriese's glove for his second error of the game, but Shauer was unable to advance. Garcia retired the next two hitters to work his way out of the jam.
The Highlanders picked up the equalizer and then some with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. After Shults and Pellegrino grounded out, Andriese picked up some redemption fo his defensive miscues in the form of a double to right center. Vince Gonzalez beat out an infield chopper to second, and Trevor Hairgrove ripped a single to right scoring Andriese. Bart Stepanovich worked a walk to load the bases, and Ryan Goetz ripped a single back through the box plating two to give the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.
Dustin Emmons came on in relief of Garcia to start the top of the fifth inning as Garcia was closing in on the 100 pitch mark. Meanwhile, Paul Paez took over for Jensen and both relievers held the opposition in check until the bottom of the seventh when the Highlanders tacked on what they thought would be an insurance run on Shults' RBI single which scored Nix.
The Toreros got the run right back in the top of the eighth, however, when Zack Kometani turned on an Emmons pitch and sent it over the left field fence.
UC Riverside broke the game open in the bottom of the inning facing five San Diego relief pitchers, three of whom faced just one hitter each and failed to record an out. By the time the dust settled, the Highlanders led 11-3 and appeared to have the game in hand.
Gavin Mills came on to start the ninth for UCR, but he was only able to record one out after facing six batters. Four Toreros reached via base hits and one was hit by a pitch. Dylan Stuart came in to relieve Mills with the bases loaded and after he struck out pinch hitter Cody Lewis, Cody LeVier cleared the bases to make it an 11-8 ballgame. Stuart ended the threat and the game with a strike out of Tony Strazzara, and the Highlanders had their fifth win of the season in hand.
