UC Riverside 19, Air Force 7 - Box Score
Surprise, AZ—The UC Riverside Baseball Team banged out 22 hits Friday evening erasing a five-run deficit to upend Air Force, 19-7, in the second game for both teams at the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Arizona. It was the sixth win in a row for the Highlanders, who raised their record on the season to 7-4.
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning showing no signs of the offensive outburst that was on the horizon. Justin Shults single through the right side to start the top of the second changed all that as Dan Pellegrino reached on a throwing error by the third baseman scoring Shults, and Pellegrino came around to score two batters later on a double down the left field line by Trevor Hairgrove to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese brought an unblemished 0.00 earned run average into the game having allowed just 11 hits in 15.0 innings on the season. In the bottom of the second inning alone, the junior was touched for five hits, two walks and seven earned runs. Andriese only recorded one out in the frame handing over a 5-2 Falcons (4-5) lead to freshman Dylan Stuart (1-0).
Stuart struck out Alex Bast for the second out of the inning, but a Nathan Carter single to center plated two more to make it 7-2 Falcons. Seth Kline's pop up to second finally ended the inning.
The Highlanders got one run back in the top of the third when Pellegrino's bases loaded double-play grounder brought Bryan Horst home with the team's third run of the game.
In the bottom of the third, Stuart gave up a one-out single to Patrick Lobo, but catcher Bart Stepanovitch gunned Lobo down trying to steal, and Blair Roberts flied out to center.
The flood gates opened for UCR in the top of the fourth as David Andriese crushed his second home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 7-4 Air Force. A Hairgrove single up the middle, and a Ryan Goetz hit by a pitch, ended the night of Falcons starter Ben Bertelson.
Mike Kazakoff (0-1) was brought on to put out the fire, but he uncorked a pair of wild pitches to score Hairgrove, gave up a single to Horst which scored Goetz, a double down the right field line to Tony Nix which scored Horst, unloaded another wild pitch and issued a walk to Shults before being pulled for Alex Lerda-Flog. Lerda-Flog got Pellegrino to lift a sacrifice fly to left scoring Nix, and struck out Vince Gonzalez, but by then, UC Riverside had regained the lead, 8-7.
Andriese led off the bottom of the fifth with his second homer of the game, and Hairgrove and Stepanovich singled to bring an end to Lerda-Flog's stint on the mound.
Goetz greeted Cameron White with a double to right, Horst and Nix each singled through the left side before the Falcons finally recorded the first out of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Shults. By the time the dust settled on the top of the fifth, it was 14-7 Highlanders.
Meanwhile, Stuart kept the Air Force offense in check, allowing just one hit in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. UC Riverside pounded out another five hits and five runs in the top of the sixth ending the scoring for the day.
Stuart threw 5.2 innings allowing just five Falcons hits and no runs to pick up his first career collegiate win. Joie Dunyon pitched the final two innings for the Highlanders allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Every member of the UCR starting lineup had at least one hit on the night with Horst and Nix banging out four hits apiece. Horst also scored four runs and drove in four.
UC Riverside takes on Northern Illinois on Saturday at 3 pm PT, and finishes out the tournament on Sunday with a 5 pm meeting with Arizona State.
