UC Riverside 14, Northern Illinois 6 - Box Score
Surprise, AZ—The UC Riverside Baseball Team ran its winning streak to seven straight Saturday evening with a 14-6 win over Northern Illinois in game three of the Coca-Cola Classic. It was the third double-digit scoring effort for the UCR offense in four games as the Highlanders bats continue to awaken from their early-season slumber.
The Highlanders scored the game's first run thanks to some wildness from Huskies starter Tony Manville (0-1). The junior right hander issued a pair of two-out walks to David Andriese and Eddie Young and uncorked a wild pitch that moved Andirese up 90 feet. Young stole second, and catcher Brett Frantini's throw sailed wide of the mark allowing Andriese to score without the benefit of a hit.
UC Riverside put together another two-out rally in the top of the third, once again thanks to some ineffectiveness by Manville. Tony Nix drew a walk, stole second, and was joined on the bases paths by Justin Shults who also reached base courtesy of a base on balls. Dan Pellegrino singled Shults home, and Andriese's double made it 3-0 UCR ending Manville's day. Young greeted reliever Tom Barry with a single which scored Andriese and Pellegrino to give the Highlanders a four-run lead.
History continued to repeat itself in the top of the fourth as Barry walked Horst and Nix with two outs. Shults singled scoring Horst, and the Highlanders led 6-0. In the fifth, Hairgrove's two-out double and Kyle Boudreau's single made it a 7-0 UCR advantage.
UC Riverside starter Matt Larkins (3-0) was cruising through the first four innings allowing just two hits, but the Huskies finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Etcheverry opened the frame with a walk and Jordan Rishavy's double moved him to third. After Jeff Zimmerman struck out, Beckmann's sac fly left scored Etcheverry with NIU's first run of the game. Two batters later, Tom Kotis single scored Rishavy to cut the lead to 7-2.
The Highlanders got one of those runs back in the sixth as Pellegrino singled, Andriese walked and Young doubled to make it 8-2. Each of UC Riverside's first eight runs was scored with two outs.
Larkins allowed a harmless single in the bottom of the sixth, and the Highlanders put the game out of reach in their half of the seventh scoring three more runs thanks to a Shults RBI-single and a Pellgrino two-run double.
The Huskies ended Larkins evening in the bottom of the seventh opening the frame with a pair of singles and a one-out triple. After a wild pitch made it 11-5 UCR, Head Coach Doug Smith made the call to the bullpen bringing in Kevin Dickey who got out of the inning without any further damage.
UC Riverside scored for the seventh straight inning with Goetz's eighth-inning double scoring Boudreau and Horst's single bringing home Goetz. The Highlanders made it eight straight innings with at least one run scored on a Hairgrove single in the ninth. Gavin Mills pitched the last of the ninth for UCR allowing a run on two hits.
In all, the Highlanders banged out 17 hits and drew 11 walks with eight of nine starters getting at least one hit and scoring at least one run.
The Highlanders final game of the Coca-Cola Classic is slated for Sunday at 4 pm PT against ninth-ranked Arizona State.
