Arizona State 5, UC Riverside 4 (11 inn) - Box Score
Surprise, AZ—The UC Riversie Baseball Team had the ninth ranked team in the nation on the ropes, Sunday evening, but the Highlanders couldn't hold on to a three-run lead, and Arizona State scored the game winner on a bases-loaded, one-out single in the bottom of the 11th.
The loss snaps a seven-game UC Riverside winning streak dropping the team's record to 8-5. The Sun Devils improve to 9-2.
Trevor Frank got the start for the Highlanders and faced the minimum 12 batters through the first four innings of play. Trevor Hairgrove's single to right with two outs in the second scored Dan Pellegrino with the game's first run, and David Andriese staked UCR to a 2-0 lead with an RBI triple to left center in the top of the fourth that scored Justin Shults.
Bryan Horst doubled to left center in the top of the fifth scoring Phil Holinsworth, and the Highlanders had the Sun Devils down 3-0. ASU finally got to Frank in the bottom of the fifth as Matt Newman singled through the right side to score Devin Marrero who doulbed to right center the previous at bat.
UC Riverside got that run back in the top of the sixth when Holinsworth laced a two-out double down the right field line scoring Eddie Young. The Sun Devils put runners on first and second in their half of the sixth on a Johnny Ruettiger single up the middle and a Zack MacPhee walk. Riccio Torres doubled down the left field line scoring Ruettiger and Zach Wilson lifted a sac fly to center to cut the Highlanders lead to one.
UCR went in order in the top of the seventh, and Arizona State scored the equalizer on three consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at four. The Highlanders managed just one hit over the final four innings.
Mitch Patito (0-2) took to the mound for his second full inning of work to start the bottom of the 11th, and Austin Barnes opened the frame with a double down the left field line. After Andrew Aplin was hit by a pitch, Ruettiger laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. The Highlanders nailed Barnes at the plate on a MacPhee grounder to second, but Torrez' single to center scored Aplin with the game-winner.
UC Riverside travels to Pepperdine this Wednesday, March 9 before taking a week off for final exams. First pitch is slated for 2 pm PT.
