Pepperdine 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Malibu, CA—Matt Andriese struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings of work Wednesday afternoon, but it was Pepperdine walking away with a 4-1 win at Eddy D Field Stadium. The loss dropped the Highlanders to 8-6 on the year while the Wave evened their record at 6-6.
Andriese (0-1) retired the side in order in the first, but ran into some trouble in the second. Chris Amezquita started the inning with a double to left center, and Brian Humphries traded places with him with a shot to right center. After Joe Server struck out swinging, Trent Diedrich moved Humphries to third with a ground out, and Tyler Brubaker doubled down the left field line to make it 2-0 Pepperdine.
The UC Riverside offense, which scored 10 or more runs in four of its last seven games, managed just three singles through the first six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Humphries opened with a single to right, and stole second one out later. Two batters later, Brubaker singled to center to make it 3-0 Wave.
The Highlanders finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Tony Nix doubled to opened the inning, but left the game with an injury. AJ Beckley went in to pinch run for Nix and moved to third on a Justin Shults ground out. Dan Pellegrino's fly ball to left center plated Beckley with UC Riverside's first score of the game.
Dustin Emmons took over for Andriese in the seventh and retired the side in order, but Pepperdine got the run back in the bottom of the eighth. Amezquita opened the inning with a double down the left field line, and Emmons gave way to Mark Garcia. Ryan Van Amburg pinch hit for Humphries and moved Amezquita to third on a sac bunt. Mike Wolford then took to the hill and Server lifted a fly ball to center which scored Amezquita with Pepperdine's fourth run of the game.
The Wave brought in Ricky Villarreal to close and he struck out the side to end the game.
The Highlanders are off for the next 10 days as they break for finals, but they return to action on Friday, March 18 for a three-game series with Saint Mary's at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch Friday is slated for 7 pm PT.
