UC Riverside vs. Saint Mary's Game Notes
Riverside—With memories of final exams disappearing into the rear view, UC Riverside Baseball (8-6) gets back underway this weekend with a three-game series with the Saint Mary's Gaels (3-9) at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch on Friday is slated for 7 pm PT.
Fans who are unable to attend can listen to the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, bring the call of the game to gohighlanders.com via Stretch internet's Game Central, and follow online via Live Stats.
The Highlanders enter the weekend having dropped two straight following a seven-game winning streak. They fell 5-4 in 11 innings to nationally-ranked Arizona State in the final game of the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, AZ on March 6, and dropped a 4-1 decision at Pepperdine on March 9.
Matt Andriese (0-1, 4.03) gets the start for the Highlanders on Friday with Matt Larkins (3-0, 3.10) on the mound Saturday afternoon at 2 pm and Trevor Frank (1-0, 3.10) rounding out the rotation on Sunday at 1 pm.
The Highlanders pitching staff brings a 3.30 earned run average into the weekend which would be the team's lowest of the Division I era should it remain that low. They are also striking out nearly eight batters per nine innings.
UC Riverside's offense was on a roll prior to its past two losses as the Highlanders averaged 11.3 runs in the six games leading up to the Arizona defeat. Redshirt freshman David Andriese has emerged as UCR's leading hitter pacing the squad with a .408 batting average and a .714 slugging percentage.
Saint Mary's baseball has been defined by its pitching so far in 2011 as the staff has an earned run average of 3.06, although the team has given up an inordinate number of earned runs as well (12 of 48 overall).
That hasn't translated into wins, however, as the Gaels offense has a batting line of .217/.289/.278. Only one Saint Mary's regular, Justin Fazio, is batting .300 or better and the top three Gaels hitters as ranked by batting average have just two extra base hits between them.
