UC Riverside at Pepperdine Game Notes
Malibu, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (8-5) has one game remaining on its schedule before taking a week-long break for finals as they travel to Pepperdine this Wednesday for a 2 pm PT first pitch against the Waves (5-6). Matt Andriese (0-0, 3.86) gets the start for UCR while Pepperdine has yet to announce their starter.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 4-1 week including a 3-1 performance at the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, AZ. Their lone loss of the tournament was a 5-4, 11-inning affair against ninth ranked Arizona State. That defeat ended UC Riverside's winning streak at seven, and prevented the team from breaking the program's Division I-era record for consecutive wins.
The UCR offense, which was missing in action over the team's first six games (2.0 runs per game), has exploded of late with four double-digit scoring efforts in the team's past seven outings (10.3 rpg).
Redshirt freshman David Andriese is the team's leading hitter batting an even .400 with an on base percentage closing in on the .500 mark and a slugging percentage north of .700. Four other regulars are batting .300 or better as are three additional spot starters and reserves.
The Highlanders team pitching has continued to post impressive numbers, and should the staff be able to maintain its current 3.22 ERA it would break the team's Division I-era record of 3.68 set by the 2007 squad which won the team's first Big West Conference championship.
Pepperdine enters the game with a batting line of .249 avg/.339 obp/.322 slg and an earned run average of 4.45. The Wave dropped two of three at East Carolina recently, but prior to that road trip, they upended Big West opponent UC Santa Barbara, 9-6.
UC Riverside's season resumes Friday, March 18 with a three-game home series with Saint Mary's.
