UCR Baseball Drops Big West Conference Opener, 4-1, at Cal Poly

Cal Poly 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
San Luis Obispo—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself in another old fashioned pitcher's dual Friday evening at Cal Poly, but the Mustangs took advantage of three UCR miscues and some uncharacteristic wildness from starter Matt Andriese to come away with a 4-1 victory.
The Highlanders (10-10, 0-1) staked Andriese to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Phil Holinsworth opened the inning by doubling down the left field line off of starter Mason Radeke (3-1), moved to second on a Goetz sac bunt and scored on Eddie Young's infield single.
The Mustangs (9-12, 1-0) threatened in the bottom of the inning as Jimmy Allen laced a one-out single to left, and a Bobby Crocker bunt and Ryan Goetz error put runners on first and third. Andriese walked Denver Chavez to load the bases, but got Mitch Haniger to fly out to shallow right field and struck out D.J. Gentile to end the inning.
Andriese (0-3) allowed just one single in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Mustangs tied the game on an unearned run in the sixth. Haniger began the frame by reaching on an error by UCR first baseman Bryan Horst and Gentile singled to left advancing Haniger to second. Andriese nailed the lead runner on a sac bunt attempt by Mike Miller, and then struck out pinch hitter Elliot Stewart for what should have been the final out of the inning. But the Mustangs took advantage of the extra out when J.J. Thompson singled up the middle to tie the score at one.
Unfortunately, that was a harbinger of things to come as Cal Poly broke the game open the following inning scoring three runs off of Andriese thanks to a double, a single, a passed ball and three walks. Mike Wolford replaced Andriese with one out striking out Jordan Hadlock and Thompson to end the threat.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside managed just two base runners off of Radeke in the fourth through the eighth innings. Radeke recorded the first two outs of the ninth inning as well, but Dan Pellegrino singled through the right side and Trevor Hairgrove followed with a walk ending Radeke's night. Mustangs closer Jeff Johnson entered the game and walked pinch hitter Kyle Boudreau to load the bases before striking out Holinsworth to end the game.
The Highlanders and Mustangs play again Saturday beginning at 6 pm PT.
