Larkins, Emmons Combine For Four-Hitter In 3-0 Win Over Cal Poly

UC Riverside 3, Cal Poly 0 - Box Score
San Luis Obispo—Matt Larkins and Dustin Emmons combined to allow just four hits Saturday evening at Cal Poly's Baggett Stadium, while David Andriese figured in all of the Highlanders scoring in a 3-0 win over the Mustangs. (Listen to audio highlights)
UC Riverside (11-10, 1-1) scored the only run it would need in the top of the second inning as Andriese led off the frame with a single through the right side, moved to second and third on a Dan Pellegrino sac bunt and Eddie Young ground out, and came home on Phil Holinsworth's infield single.
Larkins gave up a single up the middle to Chris Hoo in the bottom of the second and a two-out triple to Denver Chavez in the bottom of the third, but that was all the base hits the Mustangs (9-13, 1-1) could muster in six innings off of the senior right-hander. Larkins raised his team-leading strikeout total to 40 with nine Ks on the night while allowing just two walks.
The Highlanders scored a pair of insurance runs off of Cal Poly starter Steven Fischback in the top of the sixth. Trevor Hairgrove started things off with a single to left center and promptly stole second. Justin Shults drew a walk, and one out later, the pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Andriese doubled down the left field line scoring Hairgrove and Shults to give UCR a 3-0 lead.
Emmons relieved Larkins to start the seventh and allowed just a pair of harmless singles in his three innings of work as he earned his first save of the year. The shutout was the second of the season for the Highlanders who also blanked Sacramento State on February 26.
The Highlanders and Mustangs conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 pm PT.
