Highlanders Can't Complete Sweep As Pacific Takes 9-3 Win Over UCR

Pacific 9, UC Riverside 3 - Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside was looking to complete a three-game sweep of Pacific Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex, but it was the Tigers banging out 21 hits on the day in a 9-3 win over the Highlanders. The 21 hits and nine runs were the most by a UC Riverside opponent this season.
Both teams had their chances to take the lead in the early going, but they found themselves tied at two through five innings of play. All of that changed in the top of the sixth.
With one out Brett Christopher singled to left center off of UC Riverside starter Trevor Frank (1-1), and Aaron Hassel followed with a single through the right side. That ended Frank's evening as he allowed 10 hits in his 5.1 innings of work. Mike Wolford came on in relief and gave up an infield single to load the bases. Tyger Pederson's fly ball to left scored Christopher, and Allen Riley's double down the right field line made it 4-2 Pacific.
The Highlanders threatened in their half of the sixth, but stranded Eddie Young and Trevor Hairgrove at third and second respectively.
In the top of the seventh, Matt Carvutto turned on a 3-1 Wolford offering ripping a shot to right center that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double. A sac bunt moved him to third, but Daniel Johnston's fly ball to right was too shallow to score Carvutto, and the Highlanders looked like they might get out of the jam. But Christopher doubled to right center to make it 5-2 Tigers, and Hassel singled to give Pacific a four-run cushion. Mark Garcia came on to relieve Wolford, and he got out of the inning without any additional damage.
There was more Tigers offense to come in the eighth, however, as the Tigers put together a two-out rally. Carvutto singled through the left side after Allen Riley grounded out and Martin popped up to short. A wild pitch moved Carvutto up 90 feet to second, and a Dustin Torchio infield chopper put runners on first and third.
That brought Mitch Patito in out of the UCR bullpen, but he didn't fare any better giving up a single to left center to Johnson to make it 7-2 Pacific, and a single up the middle to Christopher for an 8-2 Tigers advantage.
The Highlanders, meanwhile, went down in order in the seventh and eighth off of Pacific reliever Chris Larsen. Larsen took over for starter Jake Hummel (4-2) with one out in the sixth, and allowed just one hit heading into the ninth.
The Tigers scored a run in their half of the ninth on a Martin single to center that scored Pederson, and the Highlanders scored one of their own on a Tony Nix double which plated Ryan Goetz, but that was all UC Riverside could muster as Larsen earned his second save of the season.
The Highlanders remain at home this week hosting UNLV on Tuesday beginning at 6 pm before traveling to Long Beach State for a three-game series over the weekend.
