UC Riverside 6, UNLV 5 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (15-12) found itself trailing UNLV 5-1 in the fifth inning Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex, but they erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on for a 6-5 win.
The Rebels (22-13) jumped on UC Riverside started Eddie Orozco (1-1) early as the first six UNLV batters reached base on five singles and a fielder's choice. Orozco finally picked up the first out of the inning with a bases loaded strikeout of number seven hitter Richie Jimenez. The next batter Scott Berke, lined into a 4-3 double play to end the inning, but the damage was done as the Highlanders trailed 4-0.
UC Riverside got one back in the bottom of the second as Tony Nix led off the inning with a single to right, Dan Pellegrino and Kyle Boudreau drew back-to-back walks, and Bryan Horst reached on a fielder's choice.
The Rebels pushed their lead back to four in the next half inning of play as a Ryan Scott groundout plated Brandon Bayardi who doubled to left to open the frame.
The score remained 5-1 UNLV until the Highlanders half of the fifth. Trevor Hairgrove started the inning with an infield single to short, and Ryan Goetz followed with a single to center.
That ended UNLV starter Cory Ginther's evening, as Brady Zuniga took to the mound for the Rebels. Zuniga walked Justin Shults to load the bases, and brought home UC Riverside's second run of the night on a wild pitch. Tony Nix's bunt down the third baseline was placed perfectly bringing Goetz home and moving Shults to third, and Nix promptly stole second to put two runners in scoring position.
That brought David Andriese to the plate, and the redshirt freshman worked a full count before hitting a line drive right back at Zuniga. The ball appeared to hit the right hander on the left side of his head sending him collapsing to the mound.
As Andriese ran to first, members of both coaching and training staffs raced to the mound. Five minutes later, sirens filled the air and an ambulance pulled on to the field between first and second base. Although still lying on the mound, Zuniga was moving his arms as the paramedics arrived. They placed him on a stretcher and the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he was loaded into the ambulance, his teammates surrounding him.
When play resumed after a 15 minute delay, Brandon Rainford was on the hill for the Rebels and he induced a pop up to short off of the bat of Dan Pellegrino. But the next batter, Kyle Boudreau, ripped a single through the right side scoring Shults and Nix. Rainford eventually recorded the second and third outs of the inning, but the Highlanders exited the fifth with a 6-5 lead.
UNLV threatened to tie the score in the top of the sixth putting a runner on third with one out, but Orozco struck out Scott Berke and Danny Higa for his fifth and sixth punch outs of the evening.
Dylan Stuart took over for Orozco in the top of the seventh facing just three batters in the inning, but he ran into trouble in the eighth. Brandon Bayardi singled to left center to open the frame, and one out later Ryan Scott doubled down the right field line. Bayardi made the turn at third and headed plateward, but Eddie Young grabbed Justin Shults' throw from the outfield, and threw a perfect strike to Pellegrino at the plate to nail Nayardi.
Mitch Patito came in in the top of the ninth to sew up the Highlanders 15th win of the season.
Big West Conference play resumes this weekend as the Highlanders travel to Long Beach State for a three-game series which begins Friday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 pm PT.
