UC Riverside at CSU Bakersfield Game Notes
Bakersfield—the UC Riverside Baseball Team takes a break from conference play this weekend as they travel to CSU Bakersfield for a three-game series with the Road Runners. The games are Thursday, Friday and Saturday rather than the traditional Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to Easter Weekend.
First pitch Thursday is slated for 6 pm PT, and fans who are unable to attend can listen to the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, bring his call of the action to gohighladers.com via Stretch Inernet's Game Central.
UC Riverside will have its work cut out for it in the San Joaquin Valley as CSUB brings a 24-8 mark into the week. That record includes wins over #10 Arizona State and #4 South Carolina as well as victories over Big West opponents UC Davis and Cal State Northridge.
The Road Runners have dodged the offensive issues that have plagued many a collegiate baseball team this season as the team has a collective .311 batting average on the year. Three CSUB regulars are batting over .360 led by middle infielder Oscar Sanay's .369.
CSU Bakersfield also boasts a 2.11 team earned run average with their three scheduled series starters bringing ERAs of 1.93 (Mike McCarthy), 2.66 (Jonathan Montoya) and 2.00 (Spenser Messmore) to the table.
The Highlanders dropped two of three games over the weekend at Long Beach State, but pounded out 20 hits in a 14-2 win on Sunday to avoid the sweep and remain a game out of fourth place in the Big West.
Trevor Hairgrove is hitting .452 over his last 10 games, and now leads UCR with a .319 batting average. David Andriese (.311), Tony Nix (.311), Ryan Goetz (.307) and Justin Shults (.303) are also all north of the .300 mark this season.
UC Riverside's three weekend starters now all own ERAs below 3.00 with Matt Larkins pacing the rotation at 2.48. However, Larkins missed his last two starts with an arm injury suffered on a fielding play three weekend's ago, and is questionable for this weekend's series.
Matt Andriese continues to be the very definition of tough luck as he has a 2.68 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 53.2 innings but just one win to show for it. The junior has allowed zero earned runs in three of his eight starts this season yet not been credited with the win in any of those instances. His most recent effort was a ten-inning, three-hit perforrnance at Long Beach State that the Highlanders ended up losing 1-0 in 12 innings.
Trevor Frank has also had his fair share of bad luck in 2011. He lowered his ERA to 2.98 over the weekend, but has just two wins on the year despite throwing quality starts in six of his seven starts.
Dustin Emmons (3-2, 5.40) has been filling in for Larkins as UC Riverside's Saturday starter, and would so so again this week should Larkins not be available.
