UC Riverside 8, CSU Bakersfield 4 - Box Score
Bakersfield, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning Saturday afternoon to pick up an 8-4, come-from-behind victory over CSU Bakersfield sweeping the three-game series from the Roadrunners in the process.
The Highlanders (19-14) trailed 3-1 through seven innings, and managed just four hits on the day up to that point off of CSUB starter Jonathan Montoya, but the left hander plunked Ryan Goetz to lead off the eighth and gave up an RBI double to right to Justin Shults causing the Runners to make a quick call to the bullpen.
Martin Medina took over on the hill, and after striking out Tony Nix, the junior uncorked a wild pitch moving Shults to third. After an intentional walk to David Andriese, Bryan Horst reached on a fielder's choice and Medina's throwing error on the play allowed Shults to score, tying the game. The miscue also moved Phil Hollinsworth, who pinch ran for Andriese, to third and Horst to second.
Kyle Boudreau pinch hit for Vince Gonzalez with runners at second and third, and a passed ball brought Hollinsworth plateward with the go-ahead run while advancing Horst 90 feet to third. Boudreau and Bart Steponovich drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and Trevor Hairgrove cleared them with a double to right center to make it 7-3 Highlanders.
Hairgrove advanced to third on the throw to plate as CSUB tried to nail Steponovich, and Ryan Goetz's infield single to short put UC Riverside up 8-3.
Mitch Patitio entered the game in the bottom of the eighth, and retired the first four batters he faced, but with one out in the ninth, Ryan McIntyre tripled to right center and scored on a Andrew Letourneau single. After a walk to Jeremy Rodriguez put runners at first and second, Kevin Dickey entered the game for UC Riverside and recorded the final two outs of the game.
Mike Wolford (2-0), who pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief for UC Riverside, picked up the victory while Medina (1-2) was saddled with the loss.
Trevor Frank got the start for the Highlanders allowing seven hits in five innings of work, striking out six and allowing two CSUB runs. Four of those hits and both of the scores were recorded in the bottom of the first as the Roadrunners sent seven men to the plate,
UCR scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth as Nix beat out a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by D.C Legg. An Andriese ground out moved Nix to third, and two batters later Gonzalez singled through the left side cutting the CSU Bakersfield lead in half.
Dustin Emmons took over for Frank in the bottom of the sixth, and allowed a lead-off single to Kevin Younger. Younger moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a ground out, scoring on a balk to pit the Runners back up by two. And that's where the score remained until the Highlanders put together their eighth-inning heroics.
UC Riverside next travels to San Deigo State for a Tuesday, April 26 meeting with the Aztecs. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
