UC Riverside 14, Pacific 1 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team banged out 18 hits Friday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex picking up a 14-1 win over Pacific in game one of their three-game Big West Conference series. It was the first time the Highlanders scored more than four runs in a nine-inning game since March 5—a span of 11 games.
All nine of UC Riverside's starting position players picked up at least one hit on the night, while seven players collected two or more in helping started Matt Andriese (1-3) to his first win of the 2011 season.
Justin Shults put the Highlanders on the board early sending a shot over the right field fence with two outs in the bottom of the first for his second home run of the season and a 1-0 UCR lead.
Bryan Horst gave Andriese a two run cushion in the bottom of the second when his pop up into the Bermuda Triangle down the right field line bounced off of right fielder Allen Riley's glove for a base hit plating David Andriese who singled to open the inning.
Matt Andriese retired the first seven batters he faced, but ran into some trouble in the top of the third. Dustin Torchio singled up the middle for the Tigers first base runner of the day and promptly stole second. After Jason Taasaas drew a walk, Tyger Pederson singled through the right side scoring Torchio.
The Highlanders got that run back and more in the very next half inning. Trevor Hairgrove and Ryan Goetz singled to put runners at the corners for Shults. UC Riverside's third run of the game came home when Tigers starter Kyle Crawford (1-2) balked Hairgrove home and Goetz to second. Shults eventually drew a walk, and Tony Nix doubled to right center to make it 5-1 UCR.
That ended Crawford's night as Robbie Richardson came in to replace him. David Andriese greeted Richardson with a single to left center scoring Nix, and after a Dan Pellegrino ground out moved Andriese to second, Vince Gonzalez walked and Bryan Horst singled up the middle to make it 7-1 Highlanders. Phil Holinsworth's double plated Gonzalez, and by the time the dust settled on the third, UC Riverside had the game in hand 8-1.
UCR scored two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by David Andriese and Gonzalez, and one more in the fifth on a Goetz double. The Highlanders made it six straight innings with at least one run scored when Pellegrino scored on an error. Hairgrove's 2 RBI single later in the inning gave UC Riverside a 14-1 advantage and ended the scoring for the night.
Matt Andriese went seven innings on the night allowing five hits, walking one and striking out four. Gavin Mills and Kevin Dickey each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. The Tigers used four pitchers on the night to try and stem the UCR offensive attack.
The Highlanders and Tigers face off against one another again on Saturday beginning at 6 pm PT.
