UC Riverside 13, Pacific 5 - Box Score
Riverside—Cancel the all points bulletin on the UC Riverside offense, because the Highlanders bats appear to be back. After struggling for most of the 2011 campaign, UCR exploded for its second straight double digit scoring effort Saturday night as they picked up a 13-5 win over the visiting Pacific Tigers (9-19, 1-4).
Each of UC Riverside's (14-11, 3-2) starting position players collected at least one hit with Kyle Boudreau leading the way with a four for five evening including three runs and four RBIs.
The Highlanders dug themseleves an early hole, however, as the TIgers looked to break out of their own offensive doldrums. Tyger Pederson began the game with a single up the middle, and advanced to third on a one-out single to left center by Brian Martin.
After Matt Carvutto drew a walk, Allen Riley drove in the first run of the game with a ground out to second. The next batter, John Haberman laced a single up the middle to make it a 3-0 Tigers lead, before UC Riverside starter Dustin Emmons (3-1) picked up the final out of the inning on a Dustin Torchio fly ball to center.
That lead was shortlived, however, as the Highlanders erupted for five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Trevor Hairgrove got things started with a double down the corner in right, and Ryan Goetz's ground out to short moved Hairgrove up 90 feet to third. Justin Shults' single down the left field line scored Hairgrove to cut the Pacific lead to two.
One out later, David Andriese singled to left center moving Shults to third, and Dan Pellegrino's single through the right side made it a one-run Tigers lead. Kyle Boudreau's single up the middle scored Andriese and Pellegrino to put UCR up 4-3. Pacific starter Marcus Pointer (1-5) walked the next two batters to load the bases bringing Hairgrove back to the dish.
Hairgrove worked a full count off of Pointer, before watching ball four sail past bringing UC Riveride's fifth run of the day across the plate.
Emmons settled down following his rough first inning, retiring the Tigers in order in the second and third. After stranding two runners in the bottom of the second, the Highlanders got on the scoreboard again in their half ot the third. Boudreau and Horst singled and Eddie Young sacrificed them to second and third before Hairgrove loaded the bases by getting hit by a pitch. Geotz doubled down the right field line to score two, and a walk to Shults loaded the bases again.
Nix then shot a single through the left side to make it 9-3 UC Riverside. That brought Jared Wagner out of the bullpen ending Pointer's day. Pellegrino greeted Wagner with a single to right to put the Highlanders up by seven.
The Tigers got to Emmons again in the top of the fifth with a single run, but UCR plated two in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Boudreau double to right center which made it 12-4 Highlanders.
Emmons day was done after the fifth inning as he gave way to Dylan Stuart in the top of the sixth. Stuart gave up a lead off single to Torchio, but he picked Torchio off first in between a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.
After a scoreless seventh, the Tigers finally got to Stuart in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Daniel Johnston singled to open the inning, and Torchio's base hit moved him to second. Stuart retired the next two hitters, but Pederson ripped a single back up the box that caromed off of Stuart into left field scoring Johnston. Stuart remained in the game, however, and got the third out of the inning when Josh Simms flew out to right field.
The Highlanders scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth as Boudreau led off the inning with his fourth hit of the night. Walks to Horst and Young loaded the bases, and Hairgrove's fly out to left in foul territory brought Boudreau home.
Joei Dunyon pitched a three-up, three-down top of the ninth to clsoe out the win for UCR.
