UC Riverside 9 - Cal State Northridge 2 - Box Score
Northridge, CA—UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese didn't allow an earned run in seven innings, and the Highlanders banged out 12 hits snapping a four-game losing streak with a 9-2 win over Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon.
The Highlanders (24-19, 7-9) )jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Trevor Hairgrove led off the game with a double down the left field line and Tony Nix Homered to left for his second long ball of the season.
In the top of the third, UC Riverside loaded the bases with one out, and Nix lifted a sac fly to right field to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
The Matadors (20-28, 3-13) picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the third as Drew Muren beat out an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. An Adam Barry sac fly cut the Highlanders' advantage to two.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh when CSUN scored another unearned run thanks to a Nix error in center. Miles Williams opened the frame with a single up the middle which Nix mishandled allowing Williams to advance to second. He moved to third on a walk pitch and a sac bunt brought him plateward.
The Highlanders blew the game open in the next half inning, however, sending 11 men to the plate and taking advantage of three Matadors errors by scoring six runs.
Andriese scattered eight hits in seven innings, striking out six in picking up his fourth win of the season against four defeats. Mike Wolford pitched the final two inning for UC Riverside and did not allow a run.
The Highlanders and Matadors square off in game two of their three-game series on Saturday beginning at 1 pm PT.
