UC Riverside 8, Cal State Northridge 2 - Box Score
Northridge, CA—Eddie Orozco (4-1) scattered six hits over seven-and-one-thirds innings while Justin Shults and Phil Holinsworth drove in two runs apiece as the Highlanders picked up their second straight win over Cal State Northridge 8-2 Saturday afternoon.
UC Riverside (25-19, 8-9) and CSUN (20-29, 3-14) were locked in a tight 2-0 game as a Tony Nix sacrifice fly in the first and a Holinsworth sac fly in the fifth accounted for the only scores of the game through six innings. Orozco, meanwhile, allowed just three hits through six.
Mimicking Friday afternoon's victory, the Highlanders once again hung a six spot on the Matadors in the late innings to secure the victory. On Friday, the eighth inning was the game-clincher, but on Saturday, it was the seventh.
The first six batters of the inning for UC Riverside all singled with five base hits coming against reliever Ryan Juarez, and the sixth coming off of reliever Josh Goossen-Brown. By the time the Matadors recorded the first out of the inning on Nix's flay ball to center, it was 6-0 Highlanders. In all, 10 batters came to the plate for UCR in the frame.
Trailing 8-0, Northridge finally got to Orozco in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Allen and Drew Muren connected on back-to-back one-out doubles. Kevin Dickey replaced Orozco, and gave up an RBI single to Tommy Simis, but got out of the jam shortly thereafter. Dickey also threw a scoreless ninth for UCR to close out the win.
The Highlanders and Matadors finish up their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 pm PT.
