Cal State Northridge 9, UC Riverside 8 - Box Score
Northridge, CA—The Highlanders took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon turning the game over to closer Mitch Patito. The freshman All-American recorded the first two outs of the inning, but the next seven batters reached base as CSUN tied the game with six runs in the inning. In the 10th, the Highlanders committed two errors, and Matthew Moreno laid down a bunt that drove in the game winner.
Trevor Frank got the start for UC Riverside and scattered seven hits over six innings allowing just two runs. Dylan Stuart pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth before handing the game over to Patito.
Steven Keller popped out to second for the first out in the bottom of the ninth, and Drew Muren flew out to short. Tommy Simis then came to the plate and extended the inning by turning on a 3-1 pitch and depositing it over the left field fence. Miles Williams drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Moreno drew another walk, and a TS Reed single up the middle made it 8-4 UCR. Patito walked Nate Ring to load the bases ending his day and bringing Mike Wolford out of the bullpen.
Adam Barry drove in two runs on Wolford's fourth pitch with a single to right, and Muren tied the game with a double to left center. Wolford finally recorded the final out of the inning on a strikeout of Keller, and the teams went into extra innings.
Mark Garcia took to the mound for the Highlanders in the bottom of the tenth, and he opened the frame by striking out pinch hitter Justin De Marco. Simis reached second on a fielding error by Justin Shults and advanced to third on the next play as Williams reached on a fielding error by shortstop Trevor Hairgrove. On the very next pitch, Moreno laid down a successful bunt that scored Simis with the game-winning run.
UC Riverside appeared to have the game in hand up until the ninth as they scored one run in the top of the third, two in the fourth, three in the eighth and two in the ninth. Vince Gonzalez drove in three runs on the day and Ryan Geotz and Shults eached scored a pair of runs.
The Highlanders travel to UNLV Tuesday evening for a 6 pm PT tile with the Rebels.
