UC Riverside 10, UNLV 9 - Box Score
Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself down 6-1 after four innings Tuesday evening at UNLV's Wilson Stadium, but the Highlanders scored eight runs over the next three innings, and David Andriese's RBI single in the top of the ninth gave UCR a 10-9 win.
Dustin Emmons got the start for the Highlanders (26-20) and allowed just three hits and one run over the first three innings of play. Justin Shults's solo shot to left center in the top of the fourth tied the game at one apiece, but the Rebels (32-21) touched Emmons for five hits and five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
UC Riverside got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth as Vince Gonzalez singled up the middle to open the inning, stole second, moved to third on a Bart Steponovich fly out to center, and scored on a balk by UNLV relief pitcher Tyler Iodence.
UC Riverside plated three more runs in the top of the sixth cutting the Rebels' lead to one thanks to an Andriese single up the middle that scored Ryan Goetz and Shults, and a Bryan Horst double play grounder that brought Tony Nix plateward.
Dylan Stuart replaced Emmons with two outs in the top of the fourth, and pitched a scoreless fifth, but in the sixth, UNLV scored two more runs on a single, a hit batsmen and a double to left center by Brandon Bayardi.
Cory Ginther took over for Iodence in the top of the seventh, but he lasted just three hitters as Steponovich began the inning with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left center by Phil Holinsworth, Trevor Hairgrove's bunt single brought Jessie Garcia out of the bullpen, but Goetz greeted him with a single to center which scored Holinsworth and cut the UNLV advantage to one again.
Nix then gave the Highlanders their first lead of the game with a double to left center that scored Goetz and Hairgrove.
Gavin Mills pitched a scoreless seventh for UC Riverside, but the Rebels touched Kevin Dickey (2-1) for a single run in the bottom of the eighth which tied the game at nine.
Zack Hartman (4-2) got the call to pitch the top of the ninth for UNLV, and he recorded the first two outs of the inning on back-to-back groundouts. However, Shults singled to left on a 3-2 count, and Nix singled to center one batter later to put runners at first and second, Andriese then laced a single to right on an 0-2 count that scored Shults with what would prove to be the game-winner.
Mike Wolford faced just four batters in the bottom of the ninth in picking up his second save of the season.
The Highlanders return home this weekend for a three-game conference series with nationally ranked UC Irvine. It is the final homestand of the 2011 season for UC Riverside, and the team will honor its seniors on Sunday beginning at 12:45 pm.
