Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team is down to its final six regular season games, and this weekend's three-game series vs. #19 UC Irvine serves as the final set of home contests for the 2011 campaign. The Highlanders will honor their 10 seniors prior to Sunday's game with a special ceremony beginning at 12:40 pm.
Fans who are unable to attend the weekend series may listen in to all of the action as the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, brings the call to gohighlanders.com via Stretch Internet's GameCentral.
UC Riverside brings a 26-20 overall record into the weekend and an 8-10 mark in conference play. That ties the Highlanders with Long Beach State and UC Davis for fourth place in the Big West. UCR's starting rotation remains the same as it has been for the past several weekends with Matt Andriese (4-4, 2.26) getting the call on Friday, Eddie Orozco (4-1, 2.47) taking the mound on Saturday, and Trevor Frank (2-3, 3.63) closing things out on Sunday.
Should Andriese maintain his current earned run average of 2.26, it willl be the fourth lowest mark by a starter in the recorded history of the program. Orozco's 2.47 ERA also places him in the top 10 of UCR starters. Dan Vossler's 1.80 ERA in 110.0 innings in 1969 is the current standard bearer for starting pitchers.
The Anteaters enter the weekend series having won five in a row and nine of their last 10 to improve to 35-13 overall and 13-5 in the Big West. They are currently in second place in the conference, a game and a half ahead of Cal Poly and two games back of front-running Cal State Fullerton. They need to win at least two of three games this weekend to have a chance at catching the Titans for first place.
UC Irvine's starting rotation is expected to consist of Matt Summers (8-2, 2.10) on Friday, Matt Whitehouse (3-0, 2.30) on Saturday and Crosby Slaught (6-1, 4.08) on Sunday. The Anteaters also boast three of the top three hitters in the conference (as ranked by batting average) in Brian Hernandez (.356), Drew Hillman (.346) and Jordan Fox (.336).
