Orozco's Career-High 11 Ks Not Enough As Late Run Gives UCI 3-2 Win

UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 2 - Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside's Eddie Orozco struck out a career-high 11 batters Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex, but the Anteaters (37-13, 15-5) scored a run in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and escape with a 3-2 win over the Highlanders (26-22, 8-12).
What a difference a day makes. Just 24 hours after watching UC Irvine pound out 18 hits in a 12-0 Friday night win, UC Riverside found itself in a pitchers dual with the 16th ranked Anteaters. Orozco threw a complete game scattering nine hits while three UCI hurlers combined to give up just eight hits on the night.
Orozco (4-2) set the tone early retiring the Anteaters in order in the top of the first, but UC Irvine touched him for a run in the top of the second though thanks to an RBI double by Christian Ramirez. Orozco regrouped the next inning once again facing the minimum three batters.
In the bottom of the third, Trevor Hairgrove staked him to a 2-1 lead by drilling a 3-2 offering down the left field line and off the fair pole for his second homer of the season. Phil Holinsworth also scored on the play having singled one batter earlier.
The Anteaters got that run back in the top of the fourth though thanks to a pair of singles and a double play grounder off of Ramirez's bat.
The Highlanders had a great opportunity to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Hairgrove strode to the plate with Bart Steponovich on third, Holinsworth on second and just one out. But UC Irvine third baseman Brian Hernandez pulled off the hidden ball trick on Steponovich, and Holinsworth was caught stealing third to end the inning.
Both pitchers continued to shine stranding the occasional baserunner in the middle innings, and the team's entered the eighth tied at two apiece.
Shortstop Tommy Reyes led off the top of the eighth with a single up the middle, and a wild pitched moved him up 90 feet to second. One hitter later D.J. Crumlich ripped a double to right center driving home what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Jimmy Litchfield replaced UC Irvine starter Crosby Slaught (7-1) in the eighth and threw 1.2 scoreless innings before being replaced by Hernandez with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Tony Nix beat out an infield single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of David Andriese, but the freshman struck out on a 2-2 pitch to end the ball game.
The Highlanders and Anteaters finish their three-game series on Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex with first pitch slated for 1 pm PT. It is senior day for UC Riverside with pregame ceremonies honoring their 10 graduating seniors beginning at approximately 12:40.
