UC Riverside 2, UC Irvine 1 - Box Score
Riverside—The Highlanders were staring at the short end of a 1-0 score late Sunday afternoon against 16th ranked UC Irvine, but they found a little Senior Day magic in the bottom of the eighth as graduating seniors Trevor Hairgrove, Ryan Goetz, Tony Nix and Justin Shults combined to bring home a pair of runs to give UC Riverside a 2-1 victory.
Down to their last five outs, Hairgrove got the rally started with a one-out walk. Jimmy Litchfield (2-1) came on in relief of Andrew Thurman, and Goetz greeted him with a double to left center which scored Hairgrove with the tying run. After Nix singled to put runners at the corners, Shults delivered a single down the right field line to put the Highlanders on top 2-1.
Dustin Emmons (6-3), who came on in relief of UC Riverside (27-22, 9-12) starter Trevor Frank in the top of the eighth, closed out the game in the ninth on just eight pitches as the Highlanders pulled off the upset.
It was the second consecutive pitcher's duel between the clubs as the Anteaters (37-14, 15-6) took a 3-2 win the previous night, and appeared on their way to sweeping the three-game series Sunday prior to UCR's eighth inning heroics.
Frank threw seven complete innings allowing just four hits during that time. Unfortunately, two of those base hits came in the top of the fourth inning and scored Sean Madigan who led off the inning with a walk.
UC Irvine starter Matt Whitehouse matched Frank pitch for pitch allowing just four hits of his own through seven innings.
The Highlanders hit the road for their final three games of the regular season traveling to UC Davis for a three-game series with the Aggies.
