UC RIverside at UC Davis Game Notes
Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball season concludes this weekend with a three-game Big West series at UC Davis. The Highlanders enter the series with a 27-22 overall record and a 9-12 mark in conference. If they are to reach the 30-win plateau for the third straight season and seventh time in the past 10 years they need to sweep the Aggies.
Fans who are unable to make the trip to Dobbins Baseball Stadium, may follow all of the action via the GameTracker links (Friday, 2:30 pm; Saturday, 1:00 pm; Sunday, 1:00 pm) on the UC Davis Schedule page.
UC Davis is tied with the Highlanders for fifth place in conference at 9-12, but has dropped six of its last seven Big West tilts. A year ago, the Aggies boasted an offensive slash line (avg/obp/slg) of .304/.372/.403, but in 2011 they have seen those figures drop to .253/.329/.332. David Popkins (.322) and Justin Andrade (.306) are the only UCD regulars hitting better than .300.
The team's pitching, however, is much improved shaving more than two runs off of its earned run average from a year ago to 4.50. Despite that improvement, the Aggies will still send two starting pitchers to the mound this weekend with ERAs over .500: Friday's starter Scott Lyman (3-6, 5.11) and Sunday's starter Scott Chow (1-1, 5.21). Anthony Kupbeans (5-7, 2.31) has been the team's ace this season, and gets the call on Saturday.
UC Riverside enters the weekend with a team ERA of 3.55 which, if it holds over the next three games would be the lowest earned run average for a Highlanders squad in the team's Division I era and the lowest since the 1996 squad posted a mark of 3.44. UCR sends Matt Andriese (4-5, 2.91), Eddie Orozco (4-2, 2.54) and Dustin Emmons (6-3, 5.91) to the hill this weekend.
Trevor Hairgrove's .337 batting average continues to pace the squad while Justin Shults leads the team with a .424 on base percentage and David Andriese tops the team's slugging percentage charts at .456.
