UC Davis 2, UC Riverside 1 (16 Innings) - Box Score
Davis, CA—After battling through 15 innings Friday afternoon at UC Davis's Dobbins Stadium, the UC Riverside Baseball Team was undone by a single, a walk, an error and a wild pitch in the bottom of the 16th as the Aggies came away with the 2-1 win.
Kevin Dickey was on the mound for the Highlanders at that stage having entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the 13th. Daniel Cepin led off the 16th with a walk, and after Scott Kalush flied out to center, Adam Young put runners on first and second thanks to a fielding error by Trevor Hairgrove. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, and Seth Batty singled through the left side bringing Cepin home with the game-winner.
Unfortunately UC Riverside (28-24, 9-13) couldn't capitalize on another stellar pitching performance by starter Matt Andriese. On three other occasions this season, the junior right hander allowed no earned runs and came away with a no decision.
Friday was no different as Andriese scattered seven hits and walked three through nine innings. But Scott Lyman matched him pitch for pitch going eight innings and giving up six hits and three walks.
The Highlanders broke the scoreless tie in the top of the 10th when Vince Gonzalez drew a walk to open the inning, moved to second on a Bryan Horst sac bunt, and came home on an Eddie Young single up the middle.
Mike Wolford entered the game to pick up the save, but after Justin Andrade struck out to open the bottom of the 10th, the Aggies (18-34, 10-12) banged out three consecutive base hits to tie the game.
